Resources for Regions

The Resources for Regions program demonstrates a commitment by the NSW Government to support mining-impacted communities in NSW. The program aims to support the ongoing prosperity of mining communities in regional NSW by providing economic opportunities, improved local amenity and positive social outcomes.

Family crossing the road

Since 2012, Resources for Regions has now delivered $345 million to 149 projects in mining-related communities across Rounds one to seven of the program. Funded projects include roads, water and sewerage systems, community resilience programs and social infrastructure such as local childcare centres and sports fields.

The Program was refreshed for Round Seven in 2020, with key changes such as prescribed allocations of funding guaranteed for eligible councils to ensure funding will flow where it is needed most; and community programs are now eligible in addition to infrastructure projects.

Successful applicants for Round Seven

On 26 November 2020, the Deputy Premier announced the successful projects to receive funding under Round Seven of Resources for Regions. These 84 projects share the $50 million allocated to improve the lives of people in mining-impacted communities. Round Seven was revised to ensure a base amount of $1 million was secured for each of the 24 eligible councils, with a further $26 million weighted to the most mining-affected communities. A copy of the full review and recommendations are outlined below.

Resources for Regions Strategic Review

In 2019 a strategic review of the Resources for Regions program was undertaken, in consultation with key stakeholders. The design of  Round Seven of the program incorporated a new set of funding criteria and key findings from the review.

A summary document of the review, outlining key findings, the consultation process and recommendations is now available.

The review made several key recommendations to reshape and refocus the program including:

  • The program objectives were updated and refined to better target the scope of the program.
  • Applicants were asked to demonstrate how the proposed project(s) linked to the relevant Local Government Area's (LGA) Community Strategic Plan or relevant NSW Government Regional Plan.
  • The scope of eligible projects was broadened to include both infrastructure and programs.
  • Each mining-impacted LGA was eligible to apply for a guaranteed amount of funding for their region.

The University of Technology Sydney’s Institute for Public Policy and Governance undertook research and analysis to inform the review of the Resources for Regions program.
